I understand that you don't want to change your original file but this problem
can be solved different.
In the settings you should be able to decide for yourself safe the annotations
within the document or within a separate XML-file but I think that one should
be able to put annotations IN the file if he or she wants to. And even if you
put your annotations right in the document there should be a feature which lets
you export both annotations and the document itself. Or the other way around
somebody gives you an XML-file which you can import into a document.
