Looks like it, in fact there was a thing where you could adjust the scsi
bios etc.

yes i know i am trying to work out whether it is the chipset mucking me
about or whether i had another problem.

OK I'll leave the kernel stuff there for the moment.

hmmmm i had another go. I removed the bttv module and all its supports
including the i2c stuff. this time i got the buz modules loaded, but
when i use xawtv there is no picture. if i run xawtv -c /dev/video0 the
xawtv window opens and is black. a message appears in the xterm to the
effect that "Composite-1 is not a valid inout, valid inputs are
composite and s-video" (I think thats right i am not at the machine now).
I think that error message relates to the fact that the default bttv
card uses the composite-1 whereas buz calls it just composite.

I have fiddled in the xawtv gui switching between composite and s-video
but to no avail. i will try to set the input on the command line and see
what happens.

another point about the failure to get the buz modules loaded while bttv
is loaded: foir the bttv card i have to load i2c-algol-bit with the
parameter bit-test=1 - might this introduce some incompatibility with
the buz modules. I am thinking particularly about the line in dmesg that
said:
