Perhaps the mplayer-users list might be able to help out - it's
not, apparently, an encoder bug from the sound of it.

It might be faster - I have not tried mpeg-2 encoding with
ffmpeg. mpeg2enc on the other hand can use multiple (usually
just 2) cpus to help out. If you turn on the 'high quality'
settings then ffmpeg is not real time (unless you have a 4 or
5GHz cpu ;)).
The issues I have read about concern player compatibility - some
people were reporting playback issues on hardware players due to
the bitrate control allowing peaks that were too high.

By all means try it (and I will do the same also). Overall
though I am not concerned about the encoding time - queue the
runs in the morning before I go to work and they're done by
the time I return home.
