Maartin, Your interest in dvgrab/ffmpeg as compared to mpeg2enc is similar to mine. Comparing preprocessing tools (lavrec/dvgrab) in combination with postprocessing tools (ffmpeg/mpeg2enc) may be too difficult to do as now it seems all tools ultimately go thru a generic YUV phase and no input tool is tied to the ouput. So possibly it would be reasonable to compare input methods (lavrec/lvs) vs (dvgrab/kino) with each other OR compare encoders (TMPGENC/ffmpeg/mpeg2enc).
Here are issues when comparing input methods: ease of setup size of immediate output files cpu usage during aquisition stability/range of hardware And some encoding issues : Encoding time for given hardware Size of resultant video/audio files Quality (subjective) of resultant video/audio. Control of the encoding Which leads to what you are doing: PVR (real time playback with delays and commercial detection) Frame accurate editing and video effects Burning streams DVD or VCD Transcoding One day someone may perform a comprehensive comparison. It's difficult enough to compare a single aspect much less a combination. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Maarten de Boer" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Wednesday, October 08, 2003 4:09 AM Subject: Re: [Mjpeg-users] VCD 2500vbr better quality than SVCD > > I think for SVCD if the -K kvcd option and -q 8 (or 9) were used > > the results would make a good SVCD video.
