        Thanks for trying the experiment.   I'm very puzzled by the
        results but as long as you have something which works then that

        Perhaps Charlie Yates will step in and offer to help (being the
        author, etc of smil*) ;)   He's also in a PAL country so might
        have a better idea what PAL/NTSC traps might be hiding.

        Well, isn't there a ~2GB limit imposed by the AVI format?   I
        believe that's the reason why 1GB files are created by default
        with dvgrab and so on.   THere are extensions to the AVI format
        to use larger files but I do not think lav* uses those (OpenDML?)
        extensions.
