I am not too sure about that. I just purchaced a AtholonXP 3200 (400FSB Dual
Mode) with a 200MHz FSB Asus motherboard with the nForce2 chipset (note: I
had to run a chipset upgrade for the A7N8X to recognize this chip and to
get the 200MHz FSB up from 166MHz).

As a result i checked tomshardware.com and see they are running a review on
Pentium vs Athlon http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/20030513/index.html and
when it comes to en/decoding, the internal core GHz rating is more accurate
for the comparison. Eg. My 3200XP has a 2.2GHz internal Barton core and it
performs only slightly better than the P4 2.53 GHz.

Tom's hardware only compares windows type programs, tho.

I probably would buy a Pentium class machine if I were to do it again (for
the same dollars, check pricewatch.com), but was compelled to buy an Athlon
as I have never owned one. It cost me about $1500USD for this system with
400GB HD and 256MB RAM. I threw in the older Raedeon 9000 and a basic WinTV
inclusive of this price. First time I bought a bleeding edge CPU ever.

I have several PIII'sfrom 450-800MHz so maybe we could run some benchmarks
encoding standard MJPEG, YUV2 and DV clips.
