Amongst other things, this period saw two world wars (or one world war, in two parts, according to taste). My sense is that we are in a similar period now. This, if true, is something that should concentrate minds. (I wrote about this some years ago (<https://edgeorgesotherblog.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/through-what-stage-are-we-passing.pdf>; I wouldn't use all the same formulations now as I did then, but, in its essential structure, I still see the substantial argument as sound.)
