FWIW - I had the same sense as you Marv.
Especially since:
i) It is essentially the same terms as were put in May, and there has been
unrestricted savagery since then until now with civilians being hit,
ii) Furthermore just at as Scahill and his well informed informants make clear
that the terms are so carefully crafted that rather than even calling it a
'cease-fire' - some other euphemism such as a 'stabilisation period' - allows
the Israelis to more-or-less prolong Phase 1 as long as they like; with
continued rights to hit at supposed 'infractions' from a "bufferzone" of what
amounts to 20% of the territory of Gaza; and with 5 points (that are undefined)
meaning they can rove throughout the entire circumference of Gaza.
Maybe it is a question of how optimistic one can be ('glass half full or
half-empty').
But I think it is far from an unrestricted "defeat for Netanyahu & Israel".
They will - whatever they do such as on-going killing - claim "they Hamas -
violated terms" and yet "we Israelis" tried to have a peace agreement - thereby
claiming yet again the 'moral' high ground.
We shall see.
