I totally agree with Sartesian on his comment here. This "victory" talk, in my opinion, is sheer nonsense. The victory , for me, is that at least for 40 days, there should be no more bombing and fighting and deaths of Gaza Arabs. This comes after over 50,000 (likely closer to 100,000) Palestinians have been killed. So yeah, a "victory" but Yossi is completely wrong, IMO. There is no "strategic defeat" for Israel, in fact there is no "tactical" one either. 70% of Israelis wanted a ceasefire. They wanted the hostages freed. So Israelis are quite happy about all this and it actually gives breathing space for the current government. The idea that is is a defeat for the IDF is also a very cruel joke as their capacity has not been diminished, unlike Hamas that has lost, one can assume, ALL their infrastructure and most of their fighters. Hezabollah, which lost most of it's missiles provided by Iran through Iraq and Syria, is severely degraded but I doubt they lost a large number of fighters. (The Lebanonese government appears to have reasserted control over much of Hezbollah's territory).
So, I'm not as sanguine as some of our commentators here appear to be. Gaza is destroyed and Hamas couldn't do ONE THING about it. 100,000 Palestinians killed and injured and most homes destroyed and all civil infrastructure wiped out (all water treatment, sewers, hospitals, roads, grid, generators, etc).
