I’m not sure whether I would call this a strategic defeat for Israel so much as
a strategic victory for US imperialism and that wing of the Israeli ruling
class which opposes the reckless policies of the the current government based
on the messianic far right. As the RCIT and other commentators have noted,
Hamas has not been defeated and has replenished its ranks, but it is more
likely than not that a brutalized and war-weary Palestinian population will
want to shy away from further confrontation with the US-Israel axis. Though the
Palestinians and to a lesser extent the Lebanese have borne the brunt of the
fighting, Israel’s ferocious genocidal attack has shocked the Arab and Iranian
masses as much as it has the rest of the world and the yearning for peace and
stability may also lead to their acquiescence to a settlement worked out by the
US and Israel with the leaders of Saudi Arabia, the Gulf states, and the other
conservative Arab regimes. I don’t see any evidence that the leaders of what is
trumpeted as a “Syrian revolution” are eager for confrontation with Israel
either.
