Unfortunately, the last alternative appears to be the more likely alternative,
if the history of what has happened under past Democratic administration is any
sort of a guide. And the US political system with first-past-the-post elections
makes it very difficult for third parties to gain traction. Indeed, the last
time a third party was able to gain sufficient traction to become a major party
was back in the 1850's when the Whig Party collapsed, after tearing itself
apart over slavery, opening the door for the new Republican Party to take its
place. And since that time, the two major political parties have taken all
sorts of measures to guard their duopoly from any potential challengers. Like
Lenin, almost 125 years ago, we have to ask the question of "what is to be
done?" although probably without as clear a possible answer like what Lenin had.
