You’re not wrong, Hari. My statement that " Mussolini’s fascists...crushed the
left-led unions and peasant leagues well before taking power” was. The analysis
of your Marxist-Leninist comrades in the Communist League document you provided
regrading the Turin factory occupation as a turning point in the rise of
fascism also corresponds to other analyses such as that of the Trotskyist
International Marxist Tendency
https://www.marxist.com/italy-lost-revolution091002.htm. (
https://www.marxist.com/italy-lost-revolution091002.htm ) They blame the
capitulation of the social democratic leadership of the Socialist Party and CGL
in the great wave of insurrectionary factory occupations in Northern Italy in
1920 as the precipitating factor paving the way for the fascists to take power
two years later.

We very likely agree that the fascist bands of demobilized soldiers and
assorted riff-raff were already the instruments of capitalists and landlords
alarmed before then by the strikes, land seizures, demonstrations, and other
militant activity of workers and peasants in the immediate aftermath of the
world war and Russian Revolution. This was a widespread phenomenon across
Europe. So was the fact that the propertied classes did not uniformly support
the fascist bands with some hoping the unrest could be contained by the
repressive agencies of the bourgeois democratic political system, their
preferred choice.

The outcome of the 1920 factory occupations not only demoralized the working
class, but the occupations from the beginning further shook the bourgeoisie and
made the fascists more attractive to its wavering elements.  That’s the meaning
I attach to your comrades’ statement that the “large scale” backing of the
fascist movement by the Italian bourgeoisie began after October 1920, not that
this alliance had not existed before.

Thanks for improving my understanding and I hope our views are now aligned.
