I work at a registrar, and prices are going up for many domain names. This is
driven in large part by the registry operators who set the wholesale price,
which registrars then have to pass on the registrants. Notably .com has been
driving the increases:

The wholesale price of .com domains was frozen by the U.S. government at $7.85
per year in 2012. It didn’t increase again until September 2021, when prices
were increased annually: $8.39 in 2021, $8.97 in 2022, and $9.59 in 2023.
That’s where prices are for a couple more weeks; they increase to $10.26 on
September 1. All told, Verisign has increased the price by 31% over the past
four years.

Some registrars were able to absorb the price increases from Verisign, others
increased immediately, others did over time. What I am also noticing is that
many other gTLDs are also raising prices, generally a large number of new gTLDs
from a variety of registry operators. I cannot confirm, but I suspect they’re
all following Verisign’s example.
