Hi, There are a few processes that happen when a machine is first turned on that, for non VO users, just wouldn't be noticed. For example, if you shutdown or put your computer to sleep overnight, there is a nightly HD "tune-up" that the OS will perform once the machine is awakened ready to go. Depending on the amount of RAM, the speed of your HD and the power of your processor, this could affect performance and would be more noticed by a VO user just because your computer is using extra processing power to provide speech. Years ago, you had to run these processes manually if your computer was asleep or shutdown during the scheduled time, but these now occur upon startup or awakening. Also, you may notice that the Login screen comes up very quickly, and if you have a noisy HD, you'll note that things are still happening even though it's ready to accept the login credentials. This will be accentuated even more if the battery in your computer actually died and therefore shut itself down on its own. So, the closer you are to minimum requirements, the more likely background tasks will affect foreground activity.
On another note, while a clean install has its advantages, I'd just like to say that in many cases, this is an unnecessary task. If you're bringing everything back onto your machine that you had on it in the first place, you're likely, sooner or later, going to have similar issues. Unless you slowly put each app back on one by one, test the machine and see how things are going, you're going to have difficulty determining the culprit. I can't recall the last time I did a clean install on this MBP. It came with Lion, and I migrated my previous Snow Leopard machine over to it using Migration Assistant, upgraded to Mountain Lion and to Mavericks and haven't seen the need to do a clean install yet. I realize that there are situations when a clean install is merited, I'm simply suggesting that it does not need to happen so commonly. Later...
