Hi Ray,

Yes, the Zoom and USRobotics USB modems will still work under Mountain Lion if
you connect them into a USB port, and then plug a phone line into the RJ11 jack
at the other end. Then you basically use the Print dialog window to send your
output to "Fax" instead of to a designated printer. I don't know whether the
people who are using this in Mountain Lion had to separately download the old
driver or upgraded their older systems so that "Fax" appears as an option (or
whether this appears immediately when you connect the device.)

I do know that a number of people have posted that this works for them. I'm
just not sure whether you need to do a separate download to get "Fax" as an
option in your listed Printers in the Print dialog window. The Apple Knowledge
Base for Mountain Lion claims that this option should show up if you have a
modem connected to a phone line. I'll give you the link to the article, since
it contains instruction on how to use the Print dialog:
• OS X Mountain Lion: Send a fax
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH10887
Please note that I haven't tried this myself. If I absolutely needed to, I
could use the 12" G4 PowerBook that was my first Mac, and that I had when I
joined the MacVisionaries list in 2005. It still works, and has a built-in
RJ11 port for dial-up, and the dialogs appear automatically in the Printer
window options.

Cheers,

Esther
