Here's a relatively recent article (November 2012) that outlines the current 
options for Faxing from a Mac and the history behind this topic.  It also 
describes the options like the email services John Panarese mentioned.  You can 
read it in Safari Reader (Command-Shift-R).

It doesn't list models for the analog USB modem connectors that I give in my 
previous post, and that I pasted in below.
