Hi Ray, John, Gigi, Chris, and Others

I find it hard to believe you need to spend that kind of money ($595) to Fax
from your Mac. A quick check of the Apple Support forums brought up a
references to Mountain Lion users using this USRobotics USR5637 USB modem for
about $45 at Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0013FDLM0/
and also this Zoom 3095 USB Mini External Modem also for about $45 at Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001FCIOSW

Granted these work via a simple phone line connection to the device connector,
and the Print dialog window to send the Fax. You may not have a working phone
line any more if you've gone over completely to your iPhone *grin*.

The issue is that in Lion, Apple didn't update the USB modem driver support to
handle 64-bit systems, so software service solutions like PageSender by
SmileOnMyMac were discontinued. Analog devices like the two listed above
continue to work on the later operating systems, and services run on Macs with
earlier operating systems still work. So if you use Fax services from an
all-in-one printer in Mountain Lion, for example, the manufacturer has to
provide updated drivers that will support 64-bit operating systems. But there
should be options around that don't cost that much. There were rumors that a
driver update from Apple with 64-bit support might be in the works, but it
probably isn't high priority. Apple discontinued sales of their own USB modem
back in 2009, and most people who continued to use this function seemed to move
over to the Zoom USB modem at the time. While the PageSender service was still
operating, they had a full page listing alternate options. This isn't
something I ever used myself, but I remember reading up on this to reply to
questions on the mac-access list.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther
