First of all, I wouldn't use Pages to simply read through a document. TextEdit 
works much better for this.

As for knowing whether a note is present, if you interact with a page, VO says 
"3 items" normally, for header, body and footer, but if there's a text box 
present, it says "4 items".

As I said before, simply reading through a document is better done using 
TextEdit. Also, what do you call a productive environment? I work as a 
professional translator and Pages works fine for me.
