Hi, I am old enough to remember Main Frames. Today's Cloud based solutions, at least the good ones, aren't running one Main Frame. They have multiple machines across multiple locations redundantly managing apps, data and various services. When one goes down, others take over the slack. This model works quite well and limits down time compared to a single Main Frame scenario. This is not to say that things are perfect, there's often situations where everything goes down, but these are few and very far between.
We purchase quite a number of subscriptions in our School District, and have yet to be hugely disappointed. Some less desirable subscriptions are dropped due to changes in needs, others continually renewed. Shop carefully, make sure there's an out and you'll be fine. Later... Maybe you are not old enough for that, Scott. When the mainframe goes down, life stops. Or at least computer life stops. And you are at the mercy of the mainframe or in this case cloud, operators. No update. Well yeah there would be updates. And maybe the update you just got broke the app that you've been using quite happily. You know how people sort of weight on upgrades to see how they go? With this,, it doesn't seem like you would have that option. I'm certainly OK with subscription services that I use on a monthly basis, such as Apple Music etc. Although there was that little rumor going around stating that Apple was considering dropping downloadable music that you purchase on iTunes. That would be a definite showstopper for me. If I really like something, I want to own it. I don't want to have to keep paying for every damn month.
