Try the update to 10.6.8 first. According to Apple's site, it's still live; if 
the App Store can't find it, Apple provides this direct link (which I haven't 
tested):
https://support.apple.com/downloads/DL1400/en_US/MacOSXUpd10.6.8.dmg
Here's the support article I found on the topic, which seems to be quite 
standard and makes no mention of discontinuation:
