They can use software update to go from 10.6.3, to 10.6.8, and yes, it
should be free. The only concern I'd have would be if Apple has pulled the
10.6.8 update from their servers, as it's so old. It wouldn't surprise me
at all if they've done so.
But, seriously though, . Why don't they want to update to Yosemite? If the
friend is who I think it is, then their system definitely! will support it
very easily.

I have been talking to a friend on line that is trying to update to the
last version of snow leppard will they have to purchase the 10.6.8 update
or can they still update through software update?
They are trying to resolve some safari issues and other things they have
noticed.
I have told them about Yosemity and they are willing to do something like
this but everything to them at this point is very frustrating to them. and
they are about to go out of there wits with trying to figure things out,
I told them to be patient and go slowly at it for that is the way of the
force.
