When reading the upgrade information for yosemity, the page states you
need 10.6.8 before you can update to yosemity.
So in that case then what would they do?

They can use software update to go from 10.6.3, to 10.6.8, and yes, it
should be free. The only concern I'd have would be if Apple has
pulled the 10.6.8 update from their servers, as it's so old. It
wouldn't surprise me at all if they've done so.
But, seriously though, . Why don't they want to update to Yosemite?
If the friend is who I think it is, then their system definitely! will
support it very easily.

Subject: snow leppard 10.6.3 to 10.6.8
I have been talking to a friend on line that is trying to update to
the last version of snow leppard will they have to purchase the
10.6.8 update or can they still update through software update?
They are trying to resolve some safari issues and other things they
have noticed.
I have told them about Yosemity and they are willing to do something
like this but everything to them at this point is very frustrating to
them. and they are about to go out of there wits with trying to
figure things out, I told them to be patient and go slowly at it for
that is the way of the force.
