Hi Tim,
By default, there is Movies, Music and Pictures folders inside the user account home folder. The iTunes folder is inside the Music folder.

When I initially ripped movies, the app put all the ripped files into the Movies folder and iTunes could see them just fine.

Now I am cleaning up problems. I started over and restored a previous iTunes Media folder. Not iTunes does not see the files in the Movies folder so I added those. When in iTunes and click the Movies button, I see the titles but not titles I have previously converted from Youtube.

I found information that suggests I only need to change the location from iTunes preferences and it will move everything to the new location. Will try that in a bit. Before I do that, would unchecking "Copy all files to iTunes library" leave the media files in the Music and Movies folders on the internal hard drive? Or will changing the location also move those two folders? This is my ultimate goal, to free up the internal drive and yet not have duplicates.

Hi,

Often, movies that are not considered “Purchased” by iTunes are placed in the
Home Movies folder. When using the method I suggested of simply copying over
the parent iTunes folder, any and all modifications that you’ve made to media
info remain as you’ve entered them. If you copy over individual folders from
within the iTunes parent folder and re-import them to the Library, their info
may be reset back to the default.

Tim and Jonathan,
Thanks for the help. I think I missed a step and ended up almost filling yo
the hard drive. So am moving some files to make room then go in and see where
the duplication is.

When moving the iTunes folder, there is the Movies and Music folders. The
dvds I ripped are in the Movies folder. Whatever I did, some of those, not sure
if all, ended up in the Home Videos folder inside the iTunes Media folder. So I
want to figure out what happened so I can sort it out. based on the
available/used numbers I think the Movies folder was duplicated. Perhaps the
Music folder as well.

Any thoughts? I am taking this slowly now.

Hi,

Similar to Jonathan’s reply, what I’ve done is move the entire iTunes folder
from your Home directory to the other location. So, cmd-c the
/Users/My_Username/Music/iTunes folder and cmd-option-v it to whereever you
wish to put it, such as an external HD with more space. Now, when you go to
open iTunes, it will say that it can’t find the iTunes Library at which time
you locate the copied iTunes folder from the dialog and click Choose. This
will automatically fix everything and life will be good. The only concern, is
that you must have the external source turned on when starting iTunes,
otherwise, it will bring up this dialog again.

You need to start iTunes while holding down the option key. I believe you can
use commandoption-downArrow todo this, but I am not positive right now. Both
iTunes and iPhoto will prompt you for a library location when double clicking
the mouse while holding down the option key. I expect if you completely remove
your iTunes library folder it will also prompt you for the location of the
library.

Are there the ability to do this from the dock contextual menu also?
