i appologize if i'm beating a dead horse here, but could we get an explanation of why it isn't feasible? A trillion different lists have this feature and apparently have no problem in doing so.
It is feasible - it is not a technical problem.
To be clear, it doesn't make a difference to me - my mailer can sort by mailing list - but it seems a bit cold-hearted to just say "No" and leave it at that, especially when several people have given valid reasons for requesting it. It's like saying, "mom, can you take me to the part? Johnny and Melissa are there and asked me to come along," and hearing only, "No" as the answer.I'm not making the decision, but I am against the idea. To some extent this
is about "who gets an improvement, who gets it worse" It is easier for
some people to sort by subject - but it looks damn silly and makes for harder
reading for all. And it is an _unnecessary_ solution because sorting by
other fields like "Mailing list:" or even proper sorting on "to:" works.
An inconvenient and stupid solution to the problem of broken mail client software
gets opposition - from me and apparently from the list maintainer. The correct
solution is of course a working mail client.
A solution for those unfortunate who cannot use any reasonable mail client: Get
a webmail account and use that for the lyx lists. This avoids cluttering up
the company mailbox with "unsortable" list messages.
Another solution which is a bit harder to implement: Have the mail delivered to some other machine you control, such as a home machine. Have this machine add the subject prefix automatically and forward mail to the work account. Of course this is only for those who have another machine online capable of receiving mail.
