Yup, that did the trick. I now have lyx-1.2.0 successfully rebuilt from
the src.rpm. For those who might need to go through the same exercise, I'll
describe what it took here.
Upgrade gcc to 2.96-110 and libstdc++ and cpp, too. But, to do this, I
needed to upgrade binutils to 2.11.93.0.2-11. And, before I could upgrade
binutils, I had to upgrade texinfo to 4.1-1. Whew! But, it all works now.
If you grab the texinfo-4.1-1.src.rpm from
ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linux/7.3/en/os/i386/SRPMS/, you need to modify
the spec file. That file specifes that the info/ and man/ directories are in
../usr/share/. They're not, they're in ../usr/. Replace all references to
the improper path in the spec file and the package rebuilds properly.
