The compiler (gcc) itself crashes with an internal error. I think it 
occurs in a file called boost.cpp but I can't check until this evening 
when I get home. Looks like some C++ template code (lots of <'s and >'s) 
which I don't know much about.

I used the first method. Watching the output it seemed like the 
autoconfig process worked properly. I suspect its something to do with 
my gcc version? but then, I'm not sure where I went wrong with it since 
I never installed a non-official gcc. Any thoughts?
