I agree that this is a good idea.
But my point of view is more user-centric. I'd like to have any support 
for these spaces at all, which means (much) less ERT for me, a proper 
LyX inset instead of ERT and more convenient working (one keystroke 
instead of four). And it means better typographical possibilities for 
the LyX users who don't know LaTeX. 
Since this restructuring of special characters has to be done with or 
without the new spaces and the new spaces follow the same system than 
the old special characters, wouldn't it be possible to add these just 
as they are and add a new LFUN-system after 1.2.0 (or is my suspect, 
that the new sheme you are discussing will not be implemented before 
1.2.0, wrong?)
