But despite all your

Suggestions are welcome.
My first draft said "If I had any, I would have done so."
But then I thought about it.
Preamble: the fact that the dialog is a pain is in some way a feature.
This avoids finger painting. We could stop that and be done with it.
Nevertheless hare is what I propose:
* The dialog could be changed along the lines of the character sidebars
of LibreOffice and friends. This would be an autoapply thing.
* the list of families/series could be turned into an horizontal strip
of Icons, e.g.
Family: [roman][sans][tt] (with nice letters instead of descriptive text)
* The icons have on/off state and are exclusive. Default is when no icon
is pressed
* there is no need for "ignore" if we are in immediate change mode
(which makes sense for a side bar)
* only color and language need to be a menu
* on top (bottom?), there could be an example text, or maybe just a text
description of what default is and what the local changes are. I am not
sure what is the right way to present that.
Of course, we lose the possibility of applying the same thing to
different places, but I think this is better served by a layout
copy/paste feature. The feature could be accessible using the sidebar,
maybe with additional copy settings / apply settings buttons.
I am not sure how good the idea is, but at least this is an idea.
