Sorry Lars, false alarm. Just found out that somehow I managed to get
a wrong (very old) module from CVS. The newest lyx-devel works great
(what little use I have put it to). It looks so great in fact, with several
highly useful new things in it, that I would very much subscribe to the
idea of quickly going for a stable release based on it -- also for the
benefit of those people who, against the warnings, migrated to the new
tabular format and got burned. (Now *there* you have a long sentence!)
