We do not have any real data about usage anyway so other arguments can make sense. Having telemetry would be fun.

The firefox example above has nice demonstration of such option - I must have
been switching off this "always show tabbar" feature so many times and yet the
only functional relevance of single tab is to tell "hey, we know tabs, aren't
we cool?" otherwise its just stealing vertical place in the browser. Now to
deliver this hint is just one time thing even for those people who never heard
of tabs. All other folks have to pay for this single moment and to me this
price is unacceptably high.

Personally I keep this lone tab because I often use tabs and do not like to have my screen jump when a new tab is open. But I understand what you mean.
