Users who don't want it will be annoyed once, they'll turn it off, and
that'll be that.  Users who want it and didn't know about it will
think that LyX gained an awesome, major feature, and will be ecstatic.

The problem is that there's lots of buttons already.  The icons for
some are not visually obvious, so one has to hover over them -- lots
of them.  Meanwhile it's hard to notice that there's a new toolbar
button.

As a lowly user, I'm in favor of making this the default.
