I have taken this point of view:
"Índices" are the ordered lists that they can be *inserted* via the *Insert
menu*,
and they appear in the output of the document: "general" "de figuras"
"alfabético" etc.
This is consistent with the babel translation of list.

"Listas" are the other lists in po files that they can't be inserted in the
document.
They are used, e.g., in the Outline.

Therefore, in case of the lists mentioned by Julio, (part of chemical class,
thanks Pavel), probably they are inserted ones.
(I just know it, I have not used the ACS class, package achemso)
