The makefile target could also be added to any other target, e.g. remerge.
Note that you need the python package polib installed. It is also not too
fast, but I did not see any obvious bottleneck without profiling.
Did you think about what to do with languages/varieties for which we do
not have (and probably never won't have) a po file? I'm thinking of
pre-reform German ("Schlußfolgerung" instead of "Schlussfolgerung"),
Swiss (Standard) German or British English.
