Now I did it. But it does not improve the situation.
The Times font is really broken. I have to experiment with another user account.
I can see an entry Times in my ~/Library/Fonts, don't know if it is standard or
if it is installed by some Office package. And the umlauts display problem is
manifest in OpenOffice too. See the second line in the screen shot below.

I had a look and would say it is not related. At least there is no Qt-bug in 
the display of umlauts.
Maybe the cursor positioning thing is another story...
