This is no option. We provide support for all fonts if possible. It's the choice of the users what font he wants to use.

True; I'd then suggest you should use LM as the default from now on. It would give better output for many cases (especially since your font encoding default is T1 and not all users will have the CMSuper fonts installed).

Please think about this again! CM are well designed fonts, so why should we forbid users to use it? CM is still used by publishers.

Uh, because LM is the same design (based on the exact same PostScript curves) but better implemented? :) There are real improvements in the LM fonts.

Hi Will,

That sounds interesting, can you substantiate that claim? (Or maybe someone else can verify it?)

Personally I can't see a reason why LM shouldn't be the default, but I'm not knowledgebable about this.

There have also been complaints that the lmodern package is about 12MB download size, because in many countries they don't have internet flatrates, only 56k modems in Internet cafés.

If it's the default only when LM exists, would that work?

But I would prefer to bring them up here, rather than open tickets in bugzilla only to have them closed without discussion.

You are certainly welcome to bring up issues here, in fact that's what I do. Sometimes it's also convenient to refer to the discussions here in the bugzilla issue in order to provide more detail.

Anyway, I'd file an enhancement request to make LM the default, but I think Uwe could have good input on this.

best regardsd,
/Christian

PS. I'm off on vacation now, for real :-)
