MiKTeX's Ghostscript is not the full version and not suitable to be used together with ImageMagick. To assure that everything works, we only check if the official Ghostscript is installed.
Yes just when installing LyX does it forces installation of lmodern.
Yes, we try to install all packages we support, therefore also other font packages, lmodern is not different here. lmodern has in the meantime become a standard font btw. so it is preinstalled in recent LaTeX distributions.
But what I wanted is to keep lmodern away from my computer.
Why? What is so special with this font that you absolutely can't live with it when it is installed. You can leave it installed and don't need to use it.
