That falls in the "try to be too clever" range IMHO. If a user entered these
symbols he probably had a reason. A search/replace that would work with
insets would be far better IMHO.
I was thinking of opening old documents with the new lyx, but
I guess lyx won't change the encoding of old documents then?
User's wouldn't like to suddenly have "1/2" replaced with an oe-ligature.
Of course anyone who enter that codepoint in a new document
will be entering an "oe" on purpose, so no problem there.
