You misunderstood me. My proposal was not to do the internal conversion. My proposal was to the same with all latex() methods that I did with plaintext(): Output to UCS4 streams and do the conversion to utf8 in the file stream. Later we can then decide whether we simply attach an external converter, or whether we need to do parts of the conversion in LyX. In both cases the LyX core would be simple and only deal with UCS4. Only if we need some special conversions we would need to add some extra code in insets, or in the paragraph class (or both). But even if we need to do that we can still use the UCS4 streams, and do the simple conversions externally or in one central place. I am currently not able to judge whether an external converter would be OK or not, therefore I propose to either decide this in Denmark, or postpone this decision even further until we have some experience with utf8 export.
