However, if we do that, there will be *no* way to work around this
feature for the poor soul who has a file named my.bib.bib, for
example. And we do not want so-called `smart' features that cannot be
bypassed.

Indeed. My only problem was was the fact that the code for the open
document stuff is a bit of a mess, and should be rewritten before
that.
