I finally found out why I did not see that. You are probably using the
(default) cua keyboard bindings, where 'escape' is bound to 'cancel', whereas
the emcas binding that I (and probably many other developpers) use, in
which it is bound to 'meta-prefix'. I do not know exactly what happens
and why, but this is certainly a math editor bug.
Alejandro, do you know how to fix this?

I'm sure that Alejandro (our math editor guru) is aware of this
problem. I do not know how easy it is to fix, though.
