Shame you didn't when I first asked.
Patch 1 did not contain such an ad-hoc factor, patch 2 has been up for
less than two hours.

As I said in my earlier mail, my proposal to do it this way was in an email
from July 4 to -devel. Having had no response, I then had to spend a while
working out how to do it. Thus my patch with the implied OK.
