vmlinuz is just a gz compressed version of vmlinux.

I'm not sure how to address your current problem but I think I'll 
mention that we never came up with a way to transition from linux 2.4.x 
to linux-2.6.x.  We had users get a 2.6 based distro and start from 
there.  I don't remember which version of LFS transitioned from 2.4. to 2.6.
