I almost let myself believe that we might win it beforehand. Almost. We are, and never have been, a cup winning side.
Watford are the new Wimbledon, except they won't get away with such rudimentary tactics in the premiership. I almost thought we would win because, in theory, a cup final pitch in May should be a sapping place, which allows for a bit of time and space on the ball. Had this been a hot/normal May weekend, I would have thought it possible, as it's been pissing it down for a week, and is cold, I doubted it. First goal was always going to be crucial in that respect. I really don't know how Watford get away with it, they use tactics I would use as a Sunday league manager, and would probably work. Long balls down the channels for 1 or 2 quick strikers to chase. Worst case scenario is usually an attacking throw-in, then all you need are 2 long throw specialists (which I personally despise - brings back memories of Tranmere and Cardiff) and bobs your uncle. I don't mind the occasional us of those tactics, or if one of the sides actually try and do something to counter it, but we didn't. We helped them along. What is the 1 thing they are hoping for pumping it down to the corner flag? A throw in. What did we give them every fucking time they did it? A throw-in. Or even better a free kick. 1st goal probably bad marking, but lets be fair, most defenders wouldn't have been able to track the run. Good corner (they had enough practise from corners and free kicks) and a goal. Second goal from what was meant to be a Leeds throw, as lucky as you are going to get. Yes it hit Sullivan but if it didn't have huge amounts of backspin it wouldn't have gone in. That was always likely to be it. Confirmed when our half chances squirm off the line or take a deflection wide (both Derry's chances). What I was hoping for before it started was at least a game, the wild dream we might win was just that. What I didn't want was a fucking Aston Villa cup final, and that's what we got pretty much.. although when we got the ball out of the air and tried to play football we showed we were actually quite good. I would always prefer to go up automatically after having a (by default) great season. I just hope that the players can set aside the negativity of this result quickly and we don't have a shitty hangover for next season. We need a half decent start to the season and get to the top. We have the players to do it and Im not at all worried by Birmingham, West Brom or Sunderland. I am, as always, more worried by Leeds Utd's habit of falling at the last fucking hurdle all the time. I wish Watford all the worst in the prem, unless Boothroyd can get his side to play football. Im not knocking his methods this season because its all about getting out of this league and he has done it using tried and trusted percentage football coupled with a good team spirit and fit/physical players. Overall, more shitty than I expected, referee was absolute bollocks but no surprise there. All this made worse by the fact we wont be able to escape fucking football for months because of the World cup. > -----Original Message----- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:leedslist- > [EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Brian Hamilton > Sent: 21 May 2006 17:07 > To: [email protected] > Subject: [LU] Cardiff > > Out thought, out fought and outgunned. > > Bugger! > > > > _______________________________________________ > the Leeds List is an unmoderated mailing list and the list administrators > accept no liability for the personal views and opinions of contributors. > Leedslist mailing list > [email protected] > http://list.zetnet.co.uk/mailman/listinfo/leedslist _______________________________________________ the Leeds List is an unmoderated mailing list and the list administrators accept no liability for the personal views and opinions of contributors.
