Joe:
You need a device to split the data from the voice channels on the T1. Many
companies make these. Carrier Access Corporation made one many years ago
that worked very well. It was called a Datasplit. Adtran also makes devices
like these. Basically you need the unit to provide two ports out, one is
RJ46S
for the T1, the other port needs to be V.35 for the router on the network.
You need a V.35 router to convert from the RJ45 side of the network to the
Datasplit unit.
I like the datasplit, because it was menu driven right on the screen of the
unit, and very user friendly. we had it configured in the day to provide 8
channels data and the rest voice. At night it auto switched to 4 channels voice
and 20 channels data so we could mirror the servers.
On the T1 card for the PBX, you just configure the unit to have however many
channels you want in service. As long as the timing is correct, the T1 will
fill the number of channels you provide as calls come in or out. Be advised
the T1 can only carry TD and inbound 800. If you are looking to do local,
then PRI is your choice.
