George & Jim,

Actually it is quite possible for a large multinational company with
autonomous business units like Matsushita / Panasonic to be totally
clueless.

Clueless about customer needs, clueless about market "inflection points" and
clueless about making money in a specific sector.

Ask Polaroid, Xerox, RCA, NCR, CDC, DEC, Sperry-Rand, Wang, Braniff, PanAm,
Kmart, WorldCom / MCI, Global Crossing, etc., etc..

Matsushita is clearly susceptible to cluelessness. Perhaps you forget
Matsushita's misadventures with MCA. They never understood the business; it
wasn't until Seagram took over the management and renamed it Universal
Studios again that it came back to life and made money.

Is Panasonic as clueless? The market will speak. I voted with my bucks for
a competitor. I subscribe to this group because of a Panasonic I purchased
for my home 6 years ago. It's been a great system, and it functions
exactly like I want it to. I was a repeat customer, as this was my 2nd
Panasonic system.

Someday I will want to replace that system. If I can't program it, Panasonic
and its dealers won't be on the short list, or even the long list.

For us ignorami, we are willing to spend more if a product is a good value.
Dealers add value by installing, programming, and maintaining the system. I
don't mind purchasing from dealers, and paying them for the installation.

But a system that prohibits end user programming is of NO value to me.

William

Speak for yourself, Jim. There's more than one way to make a profit,
and not everyone falls into the trap of heading quickly for the lowest
common denominator. Some companies do have standards, after all.

The one and only point that Panasonic does it their way is for MONEY!
Nothing else!
If they thought they could maintain even a bad reputation selling to
everyone and not lose market share they would do it that way!

It has nothing to do with gods, dealers, end users or do it yourselfers!

Money, Period.
