I have built 9 aircraft over the years, successfully using Spruce, Fir, mahogany, and pine. My primary concern was not species but specific gravity (weight) and Static bending (modulus of elasticity.  Ash, Oak, maple cherry,  poplar et al would have been structurally fine but heavier and more difficult to bend.  I have cheated occasionally and built up canopy frames with laminations of oak or ash. I do not use sitka spruce except on my musical instruments (I am/was a Luthier).  My aircraft wood comes from local lumber mills, choosing close and straight grains.

Hi  KR members  I have used Alaskan yellow cedar for sailboat mast 40' mast

about 5" dia at foot.It was much more flexible than spruce even though

modulus of elasticity looked comparable.I glued it with west marine

epoxy.Yellow cedar dust is toxic to breath also.thank you John working on a
