recommend deploying it when landing in a crosswind: just like with flaps, it is
very easy to get blown away if you get too slow. In this case, I just leave it
retracted.
I also don’t however if flying with a passenger, with the speed brake fully
extended, ensure there is enough nose DOWN trim, otherwise the plane will pitch
up on its own, which can be a little dangerous.

Not sure of the reasoning here. The speed brake creates no additional
lift so you should be flying the same speeds with it deployed or not
deployed. The only difference is in the decent rate. My board gives me
1500 fpm decent rate with idle power. I fully deploy (90 degrees) on
every landing, head wind, cross wind, or tail wind. Consider it a "no
flaps" landing every time regardless of the amount of deflection, just
more or less drag.
With passenger, if you run out of trim, you're either extremely tail
heavy or have limited trim. I can trim to "stick neutral force" with
any load with board fully deployed. Also, when you run out of trim you
should still have elevator authority for pitch control.
If you go to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgdgxVgPNAk you can watch
my speed brake deflection, first to partial, then full deflection on
landing. Board size is 9"X30" and deploys to 90 degrees down. I deploy
anywhere around 100 / 110 mph, slow to 90 mph, then to 80 mph the last
100 to 200 feet of the decent and 80 mph in to the flare and wheel
land. I can stop and turn around in well under 2000 feet of runway with
only moderate to light braking.
As always, YRMV...........
