Larry, My “reasoning” is simple; In my plane, regardless of with a passenger or not, if straight and level.........the second I extend the speed brake, for whatever reason, my plane decides to pitch up a decent amount.
To counter this, I need a considerable amount of nose down trim, otherwise, the plane will continue to pitch up unless I constantly keep forward pressure on the stick. Yes I still have stick authority, however when coming into land, I want to be trimmed out, not fighting the stick. When I am with a passenger, the CG Is now located further aft to begin with, so I already need more nose down trim to begin with. So now consider I’m with a passenger, straight and level, trimmed out, coming into land. I go to extend the speed brake......the pitching up motion still exists, and It takes the same amount of nose down trim to compensate as flying solo, however since I am already using more nose down trim to begin with, I darn near run out of nose down trim trying to compensate in this condition. Fortunately though, I still have just enough. When landing in a crosswind; yes either way (speed brake in or out) is essentially a no flap landing, however the large belly board underneath gives the wind “that” much more surface area to shove your plane around, especially when flying slow and coming into land. My plane is much more difficult to land with a significant crosswind component (>10 knots) with the belly board extended. All aerodynamics discussion aside; whatever the case, when I extend the belly board on my aircraft, it pitches up, not down, and takes a lot of nose down trim to counter. My board doesn’t extend a full 90 degrees; maybe 60 at the most, so this may have something to do with it.
