I would simply go with the Heli-Coils. They work OK, are locally
available, and will vastly improve on the aluminum that you have now.
Loctite them in place during installation, but don't screw a screw in
until the Loctite is cured (maybe run a tap through it first to clean it
out). In the unlikely event that they don't work well enough, go with
1/4" or 6mm (they are essentially the same size, but different
pitches....might as well stay with SAE and make it easier on yourself.
Whatever the case, a little grease or anti-seize at installation will
ensure the screw comes out easy enough next time.
