Well if nothing else, John's going to have to get a new set of airworthiness operating limitations, just because he's flying it in a different area and will need to get that revised. But that's a good thing because the newer limitations are less restrictive than the older ones regarding FAA notification after engine/airframe changes. I would think that during the first few hours, and ELT would be even more important than ever. That's the time you're most likely to pack it in somewhere, and a 25 mile radius is more difficult to search than you might think. They ought to be cheap on ebay these days, since some folks are swapping out the old ones for the newer technology. For the moment there are no requirements that the US system move to the newer technology, but it all depends on whether you want them to find you in a timely manner after an "incident"...
